TMG (Trimethylglycine)

TMG, or trimethylglycine, is a potent remethylation agent derived from sugar beets.

While working to promote healthy levels of homocysteine, alone or in conjunction with other nutrients, it has been attested as an essential nutrient for cardiovascular health.

Elevated homocysteine has been linked to complications in diabetes, lupus, and other chronic diseases.

TMG benefits

  • Beneficial to the heart and it functions in a similar way to vitamin B12
  • As a methyl donor, it provides methyl groups to other bodily molecules
  • TMG methyl group donates to a homocysteine molecule, restoring cardiovascular risk to healthy amino acid, methionine
  • TMG is mainly found in wheat bran, with smaller amounts in other cereal grains
  • Can be produced in the body from choline, an essential nutrient found in eggs, soybeans and many other foods

TMG supplement

Used to protect against the damaging effects of a toxic amino acid called homocysteine, which has been linked to cardiovascular and Alzheimer’s disease.

  • The “tri” implies three methyl groups on each glycine molecule
  • Can be assigned to homocysteine, remethylating it into methionine and s-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAMe)
  • Remethylation of homocysteine requires co-factors folic acid, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, zinc, and TMG
