It is an essential component for hundreds of enzymatic reactions and is involved in protein synthesis and cell division. The importance of zinc is underlined by its functions in physiological processes and it has a vital role to play in immune system defence and wound healing.
It helps to maintain the structure of the skin and mucous membranes – it is also often used to treat skin ulcers and similar wounds.
In addition, possibly because it helps to stop cellular damage occurring to the retina, it may help to slow the progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) to its advanced form. AMD results in a gradual loss of central vision and increasing blurriness, usually in both eyes together, but does not affect peripheral vision.
Zinc may also provide a defence against night blindness and cataract development.
