DMAE (2-dimethylaminoethanol) is a precursor, a compound the body uses to make choline. Choline is needed for optimal production of acetylcholine, which is the main neurotransmitter involved in memory and learning.

Choline is also needed to synthesize the phospholipid phosphatidylcholine. Phosphatidylcholine concentrates in the brain, and maintaining healthy levels of brain phospholipids may be an important strategy for youthful brain function during aging. (2-4)
