In a study, participants took either a special, standardized saw palmetto oil extract or a placebo. Analysis found that the saw palmetto extract group showed reduced hair shedding and hair loss, as measured by the hair comb test (counting loose hairs after combing) and the hair pull test. (2)

Results were measured at intervals of 8 and 16 weeks, using hair counts done by experts (including hair comb and hair pull tests), self-evaluation, and photographic analysis. In the self-evaluation questionnaire, participants in the saw palmetto group reported increased hair thickness.

Saw palmetto effects on DHT

In the same study, researchers examined how saw palmetto influences dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
