Health Benefits at a Glance:
We know that cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage and broccoli are healthy, especially when eaten raw. However, most people prefer cooking those vegetables first. Unfortunately, the cooking process breaks down important nutrients which makes cruciferous vegetables healthy in the first place. That’s why Life Extension® has developed the Optimized Broccoli and Cruciferous Blend formula which can give you the cell-protective and health-promoting benefits of raw cruciferous vegetables.
Why it Works:
Admittedly, broccoli may not be the most popular vegetable of all time, but the fact is that it actually contains several health-promoting compounds.
For instance, a compound called sulforaphane can be obtained from this cruciferous vegetable. This natural compound both protects cell health and encourage healthy cell function. Although this compound is unstable when delivered on its own, Life Extension® has found a way to deliver it in the Optimized Broccoli and Cruciferous Blend formula without losing potency.
Moreover, this formula also provides nutrients from plants like watercress and rosemary. The compounds from these two cruciferous vegetables promote healthy oestrogen metabolism and cell division [4,5]. Lastly, this formula also contains benzyl isothiocyanate (BITC) from cabbage. This compound also helps maintain cell health .
The Science Behind the Product:
Myrosinase, which is a compound found in raw broccoli, helps turn glucoraphanin, which is abundant in broccoli, into cell-health-promoting sulforaphane. So why not just pack a softgel full of sulforaphane? Because the compound is unstable.
To enjoy the cellular health benefits of this vegetable, you have to get the active compounds in the plant to metabolize into as much sulforaphane as possible and do so inside your digestive system.
Life Extension® has separated myrosinase from glucoraphanin in a dual-layered tablet to optimize glucoraphanin-to-sulforaphane conversion.
By keeping the two apart until they’re in your stomach, we’ve optimized the amount of sulforaphane you can get from a broccoli extract supplement. We also added additional myrosinase to help boost sulforaphane production even further.
Finally, this formula contains DIM (diindolylmethane), a compound shown to favourably modulate oestrogen metabolism and encourage healthy liver enzymes that help inhibit oestrogen metabolites and xenoestrogens (oestrogen-like environmental compounds) [1-3].
